Special Projects

We all have those well intended "special projects" that are meant to help our business be more profitable, efficient, drive innovation, change, or simply get us to that next level. These projects sit on our wish list, we'll get to them someday but just don't know where to even start. Even when we do start them, it takes a lot of work to get them across the finish line. If done correctly, these should be started-finished-simplified-delegated and moved-on, but if done wrong these end up turning into a career for your next hire.

MY PROJECT MANAGEMENT PROCESS

  • Listening tour - audit current state of affairs, understand the why

  • Map it out - put it on paper, high-level, details, flow charts

  • Identify alternatives - research other options, internal, external

  • Collect info - analyze critical path, inputs, costs, outcomes

  • Plan - get creative, change management, develop processes, prove it, test breaking point

  • Decision making - communicate, weigh pros and cons, involve key stakeholders

  • Implement - schedule, communicate, baby steps, do it right the first time

  • Verify - follow up, prove the process, test again, communicate, training

  • Measure - accountability, KPIs, ROI, cost savings

(yes you read that right, communication is in there several times)
